The Emerging Artists Series takes place every day of Summerfest on the Johnson Controls World Sound Stage with 88Nine Radio Milwaukee. This series highlights up-and-coming local, national and international talent during daily performances that not only showcase great live music but also engages the audience by having fans vote each day their favorite performance.
We’ve reached out to several of this year’s artists and asked them a few questions about their experience at Summerfest.
This week we hear from Jackie Popovec, lead singer from The Vindys from Youngstown, Ohio. They performed this year at Summerfest on June 26th at the Johnson Controls World Sound Stage.
1. What expectations did you have for the festival? Did it match the reality of what it was like to play the festival?
I think the band and I were most surprised at how relaxed yet organized the event seemed. We were guided by organizers who have had years of experience at running the event which made things super easy for us.
2. Did you get to experience the festival at all besides playing it? What did you do or who did you see?
We, unfortunately, couldn't stay around long due to a show in New York City the next day but we did get to hang with David Silbaugh (Emerging Artist Stage curator and director at the Johnson Control Stage) after we played. He gave us a ride around the grounds of Summerferst in his wicked fast golf cart and showed us the crazy behind the scenes, including a quick peek of some insanely souped-up tour buses (that probably belonged to my some of my favorite bands). The band and I loved meeting David talking with him about the history of the Emerging Artist Stage which has included names that we all now know and admire.
3. What are some artists or bands that have influenced your style as a band?
In recent years we have really cumulated sounds and tastes from Amy Winehouse, Florence and the Machine and Alabama Shakes. What makes us stand out I think is the combination of jazzy vocals with rockin’ guitar leads. It makes for an interesting combination.
4. Do you have anything you want to say to the fans that voted for you?
We couldn’t be more grateful for those who voted for us as the Emerging Artist of the day! We just came back from a tour down south and there were fans who saw us (and voted for us) at Summerfest that showed up at our Nashville show! It really shows what a wide reach Summerfest has and we couldn't be more grateful to be a part of it.
5. What can your fans expect next from you?
We cannot wait to roll out new songs this fall! We are expecting a new EP to be released at the end of the year. We're also looking forward to hitting new markets including Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and hopefully getting back to Milwaukee! 2020 is looking bright and we are very excited!
